A British couple expected home Monday from their Caribbean honeymoon were instead found shot and left for dead in their Antigua hotel room.
Catherine Mullany, a 31-year-old doctor from Wales, was killed after being shot in the head
during the early morning attack at the Cocos Hotel and Restaurant. Her husband, Benjamin, 31, was reportedly shot in the neck and is in critical condition, according to London's Daily Mail.
The couple was married on July 12, arriving in the sunny locale on July 14th for what was supposed to be a two-week dream vacation.
Everything had gone to plan until Sunday morning.
Police are investigating the shootings as a robbery "gone bad," according to the Antigua Sun, a local paper. It appears that the couple was sleeping at the time of the attack.
"We are just devastated," said a friend who had been at the tragic couple's wedding. "When we waved them off, they were the happiest couple in the world."
The attack appears to be linked to a spree of shootings in Antigua, a popular vacation destination about 250 miles to the East of Puerto Rico. At least two other people have reportedly been accosted by masked gunmen.
"We pride ourselves that Antigua is a safe and stable destination," said the island's tourism minister, Harold Lovell. "This has come as a great shock to us."
